What are Dental Fillings?
We will recommend the appropriate option to best accommodate your unique oral health needs.
Dental Filling Options
Dr. Barone offers three options for your dental filling:
- Gold fillings
- Composite fillings
- Porcelain fillings
Gold fillings are very durable and can last for a minimum of 10-15 years. With proper oral hygiene practices, your gold filling can potentially last a lifetime. They are also very strong and can withstand chewing forces, enabling you to eat an unrestricted diet. However, they are typically more expensive than the other dental filling options we offer, and they will not provide as nice of an aesthetic result as porcelain or composite fillings.
Composite fillings offer you the following benefits:
- Dr. Barone can closely match the shade of your filling to the color of your natural teeth so that your filling will not be noticeable to others.
- The composite material used in your filling chemically bonds to your natural tooth structure, providing additional support.
- It is a more versatile material and can be used to repair chipped, broken, or worn teeth as well as decayed teeth.
- Composite fillings often offer a more conservative repair for your tooth.
However, composite fillings are not as durable as gold fillings, and they may not withstand chewing pressure as well. Additionally, the procedure takes more time to complete.
Porcelain fillings, also called tooth colored fillings, offer similar benefits to composite fillings. They provide highly aesthetic results which will closely match the appearance of your natural teeth. These fillings are made from ceramic glass.
Your Dental Filling Procedure
First, Dr. Barone will prepare the tooth by removing the decayed or damaged area and cleaning the region to get rid of any bacteria or debris that may be present. The filling will then be applied to your tooth and polished for a beautiful finish.
If you opt for tooth-colored fillings, there are a few additional steps to complete the procedure. Once the decay is removed from your tooth, Dr. Barone will apply the composite material in layers and use a special light to harden each layer after it is applied. Next, he will shape the composite material to match your neighboring teeth, trim any excess material, and polish the filling for a beautiful finish.
